Member Spotlight: Joshua B
Joshua came to Timber & Steel after watching his partner, Andrea, get healthier and feel better. It was the kind of change that makes you take a second look at your own habits.
For a few years, training had been inconsistent. Joshua had stayed active in life, but a regular exercise routine was not there. And with an old shoulder injury in his background, it started to feel like strength and mobility were slowly slipping.
So Joshua started with a simple goal: build strength and move better, especially in that left shoulder. He knew that if you didn’t work to improve his shoulder it wouldn’t get better on its own.
The Changes That Actually Matter
Since joining, Joshua has noticed more lung capacity and more strength. Coaches have also seen improvement in form on some of the more complex movements.
But the best part is how it shows up outside the gym. Joshua feels more confident on runs. There is more breathing room. Keeping up with the kids at the playground feels easier. Workdays that require physical effort do not wipe them out the way they used to.
“Feeling confident in my strength is a real value in my life.”
The Environment
Joshua was not sure what to expect walking in, but the coaching and community were exactly what he was looking for.
Joshua appreciates the focus on safe lifting, the check-ins before workouts, and the encouragement during class. He also appreciates the on-the-spot coaching when form needs a reset.
That is what good training looks like. Not perfect reps every day, but a steady pursuit of improvement.
What’s Next
Like most people rebuilding an old injury, there is still a balancing act. The shoulder gets cranky somedays, and he has to remind himself that pushing it hard is not the best longterm solution.
Joshua has had a couple wins that capture the process. One was getting six rounds of a tough mixed movement workout done inside the time cap. The other was de-loading the bar when a coach suggested it and putting the focus back on form.
Joshua’s advice to someone on the fence is simple: show up. Timber & Steel has athletes at every level, and the workout can be scaled to fit the person doing it.
Next up is improving form on the complex lifts and working toward muscle-ups.
