Choosing to Live for Her Kids

For years, Melissa poured herself into a demanding 50–60 hour-a-week desk job, leaving little time or energy for movement. The result? She often felt she couldn’t keep up with her kids or join in the activities they loved.

“I saw something on Facebook that said, People say all the time, ‘I would die for my kids.’ Okay, but would you LIVE for them? Really live, making better choices to take care of yourself both physically and mentally? Your kids don’t need you to die—they need you to live. That stuck with me,” she shares.

Looking at her family’s history of chronic illness and obesity, Melissa decided to break the cycle. She joined Timber & Steel determined to set a new example: someone who prioritizes health and fitness not just for herself, but for the family watching her.

Finding Strength in More Ways Than One

Since starting her journey, the changes have been undeniable.

“I’ve felt stronger and able to do more on my own than I ever thought I could. I see a huge difference in my body—and in my mental health. I’m less anxious, I sleep so much better, and I have so much more energy during the day.”

Outside the gym, she feels more confident slipping into clothes she hadn’t worn in years. Everyday life—from playing with her kids to keeping up with chores—feels easier.

Supported Every Step of the Way

Melissa admits she was nervous at first.

“I was worried about being the last to finish a workout, or not doing it RXed. But the coaching here helped me understand my limits, especially with my shoulder, while still pushing me to grow. And the other members are so supportive—you really can’t beat that.”

Her shoulder has been the biggest obstacle, but she’s facing it with patience and persistence. “It’s slowly gaining more range of motion. I take overhead workouts slow, but I keep showing up. Honestly, the hardest part is walking through the door on days I don’t feel like it. But once I get here, I can do anything. Those are the days I’m proudest when I leave.”

A Proud Moment

One highlight so far: completing a workout with burpees and overhead barbell movements—a challenge that once felt out of reach.

“That day, I felt the most proud of myself. Being able to go overhead with my shoulder was huge.”

Words of Advice

Melissa’s message for anyone on the fence about starting:

“Don’t feel intimidated. Investing in your health, your fitness, and your future quality of life is the best thing you can do for yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others—we’re all on different parts of the journey, but we’re all showing up.”

And she’s not stopping here. “I’m looking forward to gaining even more confidence, strength, and skills. I know one day my shoulder won’t be an obstacle. Until then, I’m being kind to myself—and I’m showing up even when it’s hard.”
