Katie R.

About a year ago, Katie injured her knee and became pretty sedentary. She could feel her fitness level declining, and she knew she needed to do something about it. But she also knew she couldn't just jump into anything. She needed a place that could work around her injury and hold her accountable to actually show up.

"I wanted to do something about it and I knew I needed to find something that would hold me accountable to show up and do the work," Katie says. "At the same time, I needed to find a place that could work around my knee injury and the SPT at Timber and Steel was a good fit for where I was at."

So she started semi-private training with us. And the changes she's noticed aren't the kind of things that make for a flashy social media post, but they're the kind that actually matter.

"I have more energy and sleep better than I did before starting at Timber and Steel."

If you've ever dragged through your afternoon or laid awake when you should be sleeping, you know how much those two things affect everything else. Better energy and better sleep change how you show up for the rest of your life.

Katie volunteers with a youth group, and she's noticed the difference there too. At a recent winter camp, she was hauling gear to and from the cabins with the students. That's the kind of thing that used to be harder.

"I was able to help them haul their stuff to and from the cabins at a recent winter camp. Yay farmers carry!"

That's what training is for. It's not about numbers on a whiteboard. It's about being able to do the things you care about without thinking twice.

One of the things Katie appreciates most about training here is that the coaching meets her where she's at. Not every day is a great day, and she doesn't have to pretend it is.

"I appreciate how encouraging and accommodating the coaching is. I know that if I show up not feeling great, I will be met where I'm at and encouraged to do what I can. The win is always showing up."

That's how it works here. You show up, you do what you can, and that counts. Nobody is going to make you feel bad about where you're starting from.

Katie is honest about the fact that nutrition is still a challenge for her. Emerging health issues have made it harder to stay consistent, but she's aware of it and making good choices when she can. That's how progress actually works for most people. It's not perfect, it's just honest effort over time.

And then there was a moment she didn't expect at all.

"In my first group class, I made the top of the female leaderboard for a rowing workout which was totally unexpected."

Her first group class. She wasn't trying to prove anything. She just showed up and gave what she had, and it turned out to be more than she thought.

When we asked Katie what she'd tell someone who's been thinking about starting but isn't sure, she didn't overthink it.

"Just show up! Timber and Steel makes it easy because they meet you exactly where you are and the community of people are incredibly welcoming and fun."

Looking ahead, Katie wants to keep building her work capacity and strength and see how that translates to her everyday life. That's the whole point. Training isn't about the gym. It's about what it lets you do outside of it.

If you've been sitting on the sideline waiting for the right time to start, Katie's advice is about as simple as it gets. Just show up. We'll take it from there.
